Ilyushin Il-62 was a long-range four-engine jet airliner with a full metal, half-shell structure in a Soviet-made low-wing structure. The drive was provided by four NK-8 or D-30KU engines. The flight of the prototype took place in 1963, and serial production continued in the USSR and Russia from 1963 until 1995, ending with the production of nearly 300 copies of this machine. The Il-62 was created as an aircraft to replace the ageing Il-18 and outdated Tu-114 machines. In general, the Il-62 was similar to the British Vickers VC-10, but both machines differed on many levels. The I-62 had a long-range (about 8,000 km), and high passenger compartment capacity (the I-62M version could carry up to 195 passengers!), Ensuring decent travel comfort, but also a very quiet interior and easy piloting. The biggest disadvantages of the design turned out to be the use of four engines located in the rear part of the machine and the use of engines with numerous design errors, which led to a dozen or so I-62 plane crashes, including two in the colours of PLL-LOT. Despite the disadvantages, the plane was exported to Poland or East Germany, but it also found Western recipients: France or the Netherlands, whose airlines periodically leased Il-62 planes.
